             + 1 more

Since 2000, King Khan has been spreading his love like peanut butter with the Shrines, a variously seven-, eight- and nine-member psychedelic soul band, with all the trappings (baritone sax, bad haircuts) to go with it. more ›

Alamo Drafthouse Slaughter: Behind the Scenes of Austin's Newest Film Venue

We're just about a month away from the opening of the newest Alamo Drafthouse location. The plans for Alamo Slaughter Lane were started almost four years ago, but had to be put on hold when the tanking economy called the entire shopping center development into question. The whole plaza, located in the Circle C neighborhood, is now starting to slowly come to life and this state-of-the-art theater opening next month, (filled to the brim with sustainable and more efficient features) will anchor it. more ›

They just don’t write them like they used to. That’s a grumpy old man’s repeated assertion, or a grumpy old Wilco fan’s common complaint, but both are true to a degree. more ›

“Excellent Performance, Wilco” - The Chicago Sextet Plays KLRU's Austin City Limits [Photos and Review]

“Excellent Performance, Wilco” - The Chicago Sextet Plays KLRU's Austin City Limits [Photos and Review]

A funny thing happened to Wilco on their way to alt-country stardom. Call it ambition or frustration, but after joining up with multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett following the release of their debut album A.M., the band began to pull in strange and surprising directions, and they led off their double album Being There with the six-minute plus “Misunderstood,” a slice of the familiar undercut with a slow-building, screeching middle-section that was all tar, angst and noise. The band was never really the same, and they encapsulated on their best tendencies with 2002's now-classic Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. It was around this time that the moniker “the American Radiohead” began to stick. Radiohead's most recent album in 2002 was Amnesiac, and the Brits benefited from the comparison. more ›

At the event was this charming man, Trent Lesikar. Have you had enough song titles as "jokes?" Really, stop us if you've heard this one before. more ›

St. Vincent at Moody Theater [Photos and Review]

After what seemed like a long wait, Annie Clark, a.k.a. St. Vincent, a.k.a. the object of every NPR-listening, vinyl-collecting indie boy’s desire, a.k.a. the recent creator of a record warmly wrapped in a choir of critical hosannas, finally walked out onto the dimly-lit Moody Theater stage. more ›

Talib Kweli at Mohawk [Photos and Review]

Comparing Talib Kweli to Mos Def is criminally unfair, but then again, we are living in a time of swollen nostalgia for the pop of the last twenty years, and it’s not like Black Star haven’t cashed in. more ›

Bon Iver at The Long Center [Snapshots and Review]

             + 0 more

We all knew that Bon Iver was a special project when singer/songwriter Justin Vernon, crafted his heart-torn 2007 debut album, For Emma, Forever Ago, in a cabin in Wisconsin’s wilderness. With that he captured all that cold, barren isolation and poured that sentiment into stripped down acoustic melodies and yearning falsettos that set chills up our spines as we listened along. What we may not have realized is that Bon Iver’s self-titled sophomore release set the stage for Vernon to return a new man, bold and brave and ready for a new venture of his creation. more ›

Active Child, Com Truise, and Knifight at Emo's [Snapshots and Review]

             + 9 more

A lot can change in a little over a year. The last time Active Child was in Austin, Pat Grossi only had the stellar Curtis Lane EP to his name, and his touring outfit consisted of himself and multi-instrumentalist Startton Easter. However, when they opened for Islands, they sounded sure of their sound, hinting at something greater to come. Now, on the heels of the acclaimed You Are All I See and the addition of a percussionist to their live repertoire, Grossi and company have found their stride. Their triumphant performance at Emo's was more than ample proof of this, as they sounded confident and focused on making their first headlining show in Austin a memorable one. more ›

Woods, White Fence, and Holy Wave at Mohawk [Photos and Review]

             + 5 more

Over the past five years, Brooklyn’s Woods have crafted an immense musical world to dive into. Each year has seen multiple releases spread across full-length albums, tapes, 7”-singles, and collaborations with other acts, all released on the band’s thriving record label Woodsist. The music itself is analog-recorded psychedelic folk, full of tape hiss, sound collages, guitar freak-outs, and Jeremy Earl’s distinctive falsetto warble. Despite the recorded-in-a-broom-closet sound, the group tours relentlessly. On the heels of the third annual Woodsist festival held in Big Sur, California, Woods rolled into the Mohawk on Friday night. more ›

Arctic Monkeys at Stubb's [Review and Photos]

The 2,000 fans who bought tickets months ago to Arctic Monkeys' sold-out gig had to have known they were rolling the dice. An August 2 concert outdoors at Stubb's? The weather was less than cooperative, clocking in at 100 degrees at 9pm, with no sun in sight. The rowdy crowd did their best to rally, shouting football chants, bobbing their heads to the stoner rock blaring through the PA between sets, and unwisely trying to hydrate with beer. more ›
