Weekend Music Preview: Kid Sister at The Mohawk [Friday]

It seems like it was just yesterday that Melissa Young, a.k.a. Kid Sister, captured our hearts with her pulsating hit “Pro Nails.” The older sibling of Flosstradamus’ Josh Young (J2K), she had already made a name for herself in Chicago in the mid-aughts courtesy of numerous memorable performances at her brother’s shindigs. By the time “Pro Nails” arrived (back in 2007), she was firmly entrenched on many a music guru’s radar, and in the ensuing years, the fledgling starlet has rubbed shoulders with many well-respected players in the business. Kid Sister’s stellar debut full-length Ultraviolet was produced by the reputable A-Trak and contained contributions by luminaries such as Cee-Lo, Gant-Man, Estelle, and Kanye West (who remixed the aforementioned “Pro Nails”). Quite an impressive list of collaborators for a first album, it has to be said. Just prior to the release of that record last November, Kid Sister was in Austin for Fun Fun Fun Fest, showcasing her undoubted talent and bestowing her substantial charm upon us via a scintillating set. We’ve been eagerly awaiting her return ever since. more ›

Le Diamant Brut: Fun Fun Fun Fest Edition w/ The Jesus Lizard & Kid Sister

What’s the Deal: Fun Fun Fun Fest has built a reputation of bringing in “What the… I never thought I’d ever have a chance to see that band” bands over the past few years with groups like Dead Milkmen, Bad Brains, Danzig and The Jesus Lizard. But, here in Austin, where an almost unnatural lust for the music we loved from a bygone era (even though the 90s aren’t that long gone) mixes with the fact that the group formed here about 20 years ago before relocating to Chicago, their performance is at the top of many Fun Fest goers’ must-see lists. Also, it doesn’t hurt that the group has a reputation for putting on exciting and ferocious live shows. more ›
