Yesterday we mentioned that there was some Fun Fest news, and today we let you know that a small batch of early bird tickets were being released at 6 p.m. Last year, the early bird tickets were all gone in about an hour and a half - tonight, they went in about 45 minutes. All without even a hint as to what this year's lineup might include. Clearly Austin's "little" festival that could has made great strides in the last couple of years, and we're thrilled to see so much excitement building for November. Naturally Austinist is on board again this year as media partners (along with our good friends at Giant Noise) and we'll have much more information (yes, including breaking lineup news) in coming months. Till then, stay tuned and create your profile at their website - it's probably the best way to stay in touch with the community and get all the latest news.

Austin music fans may well get accustomed to an early Christmas each year now that Fun Fun Fun Fest has established itself as a veritable source of goodies come November. Fun Fest Alert: Yellow Stage Details Announced

Weekend Music Preview: Scavenger Hunt, Frank Smith, & Scout Niblett [The Mohawk / Friday]
Now that the ACL Fest fervor has subsided and The Eagles have come and gone, all eyes (and ears) turn to next month’s Fun Fun Fun Fest at Waterloo Park. Devo, Bad Religion, Slick Rick, MGMT, and Mastodon are just a few of the many, many esteemed acts you’ll be able to catch at the fifth installment of this burgeoning gathering. Fun Fest Alert: Scavenger Hunt [October 15th / The Mohawk]
It’s back! After wreaking much havoc last year, Fun Fun Fun Fest’s Scavenger Hunt returns on October 15th to cause certain chaos yet again.
2010 Fun Fun Fun Fest Update [November / Waterloo Park]
We’ll admit that we were pretty content with the prospect of catching legends like Bad Religion, DEVO, Slick Rick, “Weird Al” Yankovic, and Suicidal Tendencies all in one weekend during this year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest. But we had a feeling that there was more to come. Today, the festival today announced the addition of quite a few new artists to its 2010 lineup. We’re especially excited that influential, innovative pop outfit The Apples in stereo will be a part of the revelry this November. The band was at the forefront of the Elephant 6 collective scene back in the day. Earlier this year, they dropped their seventh record, the unfailingly impressive Travelers in Space and Time. We’re also pleased to see local Queen tribute band Magnifico in the mix. If you haven’t caught this spectacle yet, you’re in for something special. Toddy Barry, Chris Hardwick, Andy Ritchie, Shane Mauss, Terp2it, Moshe Kasher, and Sean Patton round off the updated bill.
Breaking: Fun Fun Fun Fest Lineup Leaks
Suicidal Tendencies' hard hitting aural onslaught was a favorite of metal and punk fans alike back in the day. Now a new generation (and old fans, of course) will get to witness the California band's mayhem live in concert. Lights...Camera...Revolution! from 1990 should be a staple of every heavy music connoisseur's iPod rotation, we reckon. Next up, we're thrilled that oft-controversial rapper Slick Rick (or Richard Walters) will be bringing his novel gift for storytelling and hits like “Treat Her Like A Prostitute” to Waterloo Park. Offering up legendary artists at each edition has truly become a Fun Fest tradition, if not a trademark. Let that take nothing away from the third Fun Fest performer to be revealed today, Best Coast. Although a very new act, it's safe to say that their irresistible melodies could fit in in any generation. The brainchild of Bethany Consentino, Best Coast will surely shed plenty of sunshine at this Fun Fest, regardless of exasperating dust storms or unending downpours. Here's to Fun Fest 2010 -- may it be another unforgettable addition to Austin, Texas' rich chronicles.
Fun Fest Weekend Preview: After The Jump & Local Music Is Sexy
The fourth edition of Fun Fun Fun Fest officially kicks off at noon tomorrow and naturally, one can be forgiven for looking ahead to day one already. The likes of The Jesus Lizard, Les Savy Fav, Chelsea Peretti, The Sword, Pharcyde, Neon Indian, and Shearwater are all on Saturday’s schedule but let’s hold our horses for we still need to indulge in a full night of revelry before we set up camp at Waterloo Park for the weekend. This evening, Austinist proudly presents the After The Jump blogger’s panel at 5:30 at The Mohawk, followed by the latest installment of our Local Music Is Sexy series, spread across the 'hawk and Club de Ville this year.

FFFF Interview w/ Sweet, Sweet Racket: Times New Viking
Few bands do a better job tossing catchy melodies and choruses into such a mucky stew of noise and deliberately crappy recording techniques than Columbus, Ohio's Times New Viking. The trio, critically-lauded yet still dodging most of the mainstream love they probably deserve, is riding high on perhaps their crispest and most complete LP yet, Born Again Revisited, a batch of concoctions that sticks in the mind even though about 80% of its words are unintelligible. In preparation for their performance (which, if their other concerts are any indication, will be a nonstop onslaught of energy) at Fun Fun Fun Fest this Saturday, we shot some questions across the internet at Times New Viking, and guitarist Jared Phillips shot back some answers, including this little nugget: "fuck art." Enjoy.
Fun Fest Alert: On-Site Activities Announced
Fun Fun Fun Fest is just a couple of weeks away and we sure are licking our chops in anticipation of what promises to be the biggest installment of the emerging annual festival. The organizers have been keeping busy, doling out tickets weekly via their Tuesday Trivia on Twitter contest, and last Saturday, over 40 teams participated in a Scavenger Hunt to win a whole host of prizes. Check out all the pictures -- you won’t regret it!

Fun Fest Interview: Mark Sultan from The King Khan & BBQ Show
If you’ve got a penchant for undeniably catchy garage-rock, look no further than The King Khan & BBQ Show, performing on Sunday, November 8th at the 2009 Fun Fun Fun Fest. Mark Sultan and King Khan first teamed up in the ‘90s, gaining notoriety with their band The Spaceshits’ belligerent shows. At the start of this century, Sultan was turning heads as the one man team that is the BBQ and Khan was busy finding success with his soul outfit The Shrines. But it was only a matter of time before the two friends reunited. The aptly named The King Khan & BBQ Show dropped its self-titled debut album in 2005 and followed it up with the What’s For Dinner? LP in 2006. They’ve appeased the masses with a handful of 7" records since; a new full-length called Invisible Girl is expected next month.
Fun Fest '09 Update: GZA, Melt-Banana Added to '09 Line-Up!
We’ve been checking the official Fun Fest website everyday for updates but having not seen any new announcements for a while, we gathered our technical experts last night. After a few hours of brainstorming, our team conjured up a moment of brilliance and hacked into the Fun Fest mainframe. We are pleased to announce that Wu-Tang Clan founding member GZA, legendary Japanese noise-brokers Melt-Banana, eclectic Californian outfit WHY?, and comedian Todd Barry have all been added to this year Fun Fest line-up.
Fun Fest '09 Update: The King Khan & BBQ Show, Red Sparowes To Perform This Year
The 2009 Fun Fun Fun Fest is just a few months away and as always, we’ll be bringing you plenty of previews in the upcoming months, and a good amount of reviews as well once the dust settles. The fourth edition of this annual gathering of punk, hardcore, electro, hip-hop, indie-rock, and comedy will take place on November 7th and 8th at Waterloo Park and Transmission Entertainment has just revealed a few more names on this year’s line-up.
Weekend Music Preview: Free Week @ Emo's
The original home of Free Week, Emo's isn't going to let this wonderful concept disappear from within its fabled walls. The venue, now sans Lounge but always a cornerstone of the blooming Red River music scene, has assembled quite the line-up to kick off its 2009 Free Week.
Weekend Music Preview: Gabe Hascall @ The Mohawk & Unwrapped @ Lamberts
If you’re not familiar with Gabe Hascall’s contributions to Austin’s music history, then you best head to The Mohawk on Sunday evening when he performs a combination of new solo material as well as classics from his storied past. Hascall was a core member of The Impossibles. The band’s early ska output was a mainstay of the college and live music scene in town in the 90’s. After dealing with some internal issues, the band bounced back with 2000’s Return, boasting a new powerpop sound and a plethora of anthemic sing-alongs like “Enter/Return,” “(Never) Say Goodbye,” “Connecticut,” “This Is Fuckin Tragic,” “Oh Angelina,” and “Hey, You Kids!” The 4 Song Brick Bomb EP followed in 2001.
Golden Arm Trio & Invincible Czars Holiday Show @ The Mohawk this Friday
With December 25th fast approaching, two of Austin’s most unique bands pile on the Christmas cheer at The Mohawk on December 19th with the Golden Arm Trio & Invincible Czars Holiday Show. We caught up with Golden Arm Trio’s ringleader Graham Reynolds shortly before Fun Fest 2008 -- read our interview here. During Fun Fest itself, we coaxed in Laurie Gallardo from KUT 90.5 FM to have a brief chat with Reynolds -- watch the interview clip after the jump.
Preview: Aasim Holiday Party @ Red 7 featuring ...Trail of Dead & more
Every year, come December, we face a barrage of office holiday parties and family get-togethers, and then there’s this. Local photographer Aasim Syed has turned an evening at Red 7 into a veritable festival with this Saturday’s appropriately named “Aasim Holiday Party.” The outside stage will feature sets by ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, the legendary (to us) Glorium (performing Close Your Eyes to mark the ten year anniversary of the album’s release), and Those Peabodys, while the spacious inside area will be entertained by Ume, The Black, and Diagonals. DJ sets by Fuckin’ A and Ramesh Srivastava (Voxtrot) to keep everyone warm and busy during the set changes are also a part of this stellar line-up.
Download the New Trail of Dead Tune
If you missed ...Trail of Dead at Fun Fun Fun Fest, you can get your fix over at RCRD LBL today, where they're sharing an exclusive download of the new album's first single, "Bells of Creation."
Music Notes: Gamblers, Khan & What's Wrong With the Scene
The new Riverboat Gamblers album, Underneath the Owl, doesn't come out until March 2009, but SPIN is offering a free download of the single, "A Choppy, Yet Sincere Apology."

Fun Fun Fun Fest Sunday Recap
Pop music has its Brian Wilson, soul has Sly Stone, and rap has Kool Keith – the eccentric recluse whose odd behavior and flights of unpredictability hint at genius.
