Breaking: ACL Adds Them Crooked Vultures, XBox to Lineup

By Paige Maguire on Sep 1, 2009

Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and long-time Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones have joined forces in Them Crooked Vultures creating a super-group of epic proportions, or at least of ACL proportions. The group has been added to the October festival's lineup, filling in the spot left vacant by Lily Allen on the new XBox stage. They'll also be performing at Stubb's on Oct. 1 and tickets for that go on sale Saturday.

Perhaps you should be thanking me and the other complainers, zeus? Then again, I have no idea what Lily Allen was or what this Crooked Vultures outfit will be like. So I can't really comment on the significance of this substitution.

I would say that this late addition to the roster does bolster the argument that Charles Attal could have gotten someone bigger than the Yeah-Yeahs to replace the Beastie Boys. My ongoing criticism is that Mr. Attal doesn't seem to set up any Plan B acts to replace headliners that cancel.

It's not that hard to do. When he cuts the contract with the original headliner, he could include a clause that says if they cancel, their insurance company has to pay the fee to get Radiohead to play. Then he signs Radiohead under a retainer in case the headliner bails. Radiohead keeps that date open in their schedule for a fly-in and they pocket some nominal fee.

That strategy would keep the cost of a cancel within the hands of those responsible. Without this contingency plan, the cost of a cancel falls on the ticket-buyers who miss out seeing bands they paid to see. But hey, I'm just a bystander who won't ever suffer this fate because I'm not one of those ticket buyers.

This is definitely an upgrade over Lily Allen. Good job, C3!

  • Cool, I finally have an aftershow to go to!

C3 really dropped the ball on aftershows,

maybe tight budget with the lineup this year, DMB,PJam... Beasties-Wonder if they got anything out of it and if he is doing well? best of luck guys!

Emo's thanks for having WINO Sun. as an UNofficial show.

Yes! Good work by C3 on this. Can't wait!

I can't wait for people to complain that ACL Fest got a (potentially) awesome rock band to fill in for Lily "No one gives a shit" Allen. Or maybe people will complain that it's between them and Andrew Bird now. Or maybe people will just complain that they didn't get Nirvana and Led Zep to both reunite and play at the same exact time while sitting on each others' shoulders.

sorry if i'm pointing out the obvious on this one but in addition to people pissing and moaning about everything in this town there are quite a few people who like to make snide, snarky and sarcastic remarks. wattage, you would fall into the category of the later.

Guilty as charged! (I'm addicted to complaining about complainers. What can I say?)

If it weren't for complainers, corporations such as C3 would lose a valuable market research channel. It could be said that if it weren't for the complainers, there'd be little reason for things like this addition to happen. Why should a corporation go the extra mile when all its customers seem complacent?

I will say that the Alamo Drafthouse has updated their menu to provide free refills on their $3.50 sodas. Could it have been due to my incessant rants? Or just coincidence?

The Ralph Nader of Refills. The Caesar Chavez of Soda. The Dr. Phil of Dr. Pepper. Anyone have any more?
